Ask most people what they want from their renovation and they will talk about kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, and furniture. Lighting comes up last — if at all. And yet, light is the single element that determines how every other choice in your home is experienced.

Get the lighting right and even a modest space feels extraordinary. Get it wrong and no amount of beautiful materials, careful furniture selection, or premium wall coverings will save it. A poorly lit room feels flat, cold, and unfinished — regardless of how much was invested in everything else.

This is why at Maison Gilt, the lighting plan is never an afterthought. It is one of the first things we design — and one of the most important conversations we have with every client.

"Light is the invisible material. It is the one thing in a room that you feel before you even notice it."

The three layers of light

A great lighting plan works in three layers — each serving a different purpose, each contributing to the whole.

01

Ambient Light

The base layer. General illumination that fills the room and sets the overall brightness. Recessed downlights, ceiling fixtures, and cove lighting are typical sources. The goal is even, comfortable light that does not create harsh shadows.

02

Accent Light

The dramatic layer. Directional light that highlights specific elements — a piece of art, a textured wall, a beautiful shelf. Accent lighting creates depth, draws the eye, and gives a room its character and atmosphere.

03

Task Light

The functional layer. Focused light for specific activities — reading, cooking, working. Bedside lamps, under-cabinet kitchen lighting, and desk lights all fall here. Task light must be positioned and aimed correctly to be comfortable.

Most homes — even beautifully designed ones — rely almost entirely on ambient light. They have a ceiling light in every room and nothing else. The result is flat, institutional, and entirely lacking in atmosphere. The difference between a hotel suite and a generic room is almost always the lighting.

Why lighting must be planned early

Here is the most important practical point: lighting cannot be added after a renovation is complete. The moment you close the walls and lay the floors, your lighting options become severely limited. Recessed fixtures, hidden cove lighting, in-floor illumination, built-in cabinet lighting — all of these require electrical work that must happen before the finishes go in.

This is the most common and most costly mistake we see in renovations. Clients invest in beautiful kitchens and flooring, then try to add lighting at the end — and find they are limited to surface-mounted spots and floor lamps that never quite achieve the effect they imagined.

At Maison Gilt, we design the lighting plan in parallel with the architecture and layout — before any walls are touched. We map every light source, specify every fixture, and plan every switch and dimmer circuit so that by the time the builders arrive, everything is perfectly coordinated.

Light and atmosphere

Beyond function, light is the primary tool for creating atmosphere. The same room can feel completely different at different times of day and for different occasions — but only if the lighting allows for it.

Dimmers are essential. The ability to shift from bright, energising light in the morning to warm, intimate light in the evening transforms how a space feels and functions. We specify dimmer circuits for almost every circuit in a home — living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and even bathrooms benefit enormously from the ability to modulate light.

Colour temperature matters just as much as brightness. Warm white light (2700–3000K) creates the cosy, intimate atmosphere that most people want in their homes. Cool white light (4000K+) feels clinical and is best reserved for workspaces. We specify colour temperature carefully for every room and every fixture — ensuring that the light always flatters the materials and the people in the space.

Statement lighting as sculpture

Beyond the technical plan, lighting also offers one of the most powerful design opportunities in any interior. A statement pendant above a dining table is not just a light source — it is a sculptural element, a focal point, a piece of design that anchors the entire room.

We work with exceptional lighting designers and suppliers to source fixtures that are genuinely beautiful objects in their own right — pieces that add character and personality to a space by day as well as by night. A well-chosen pendant, a pair of wall sconces, a reading lamp with real presence — these are the finishing touches that elevate a home from well-designed to truly extraordinary.

"The right light fixture does two jobs: it illuminates the room, and it decorates it. When you find one that does both perfectly, you know."

Our approach to lighting at Maison Gilt

Every project we undertake includes a full lighting plan as standard. We design it together with you — walking through every room, every activity, every mood you want to create. We specify every fixture, every circuit, every dimmer. We coordinate with your electrician to ensure everything is installed correctly and to specification.

The result is a home where the light always feels right. Where you can move from morning to evening, from busy to calm, from functional to intimate — simply by adjusting the light around you.

It is one of the details that our clients notice most, and one of the things they thank us for most. Because great lighting is something you feel every single day — even when you stop noticing it.
